Someone's seeding an old film so it stays where people find it someone writes the subtitles for a show nobody bought, and doesn't mind it the skaters poured their own concrete under the motorway at night the Minecraft server has a court, and it gets the verdicts mostly right the farmers crack their tractors' software so they can fix them on their own the fan wiki argues every edit out until they find a common tone the birdwatchers count the starlings every spring and share the numbers the knitting group on Wednesdays runs on rules nobody wrote but everyone can see someone's doing something that makes no money someone's doing something that's not a career No speeches and no banners we're not waiting to be told we set it up, we argue it out and change it when it's old It doesn't look like politics it doesn't have a name nobody's on the news for it it happens all the same it's people running things themselves without asking who's in charge it's how we are going to run the world in rooms that aren't that large The live roleplayers in the forest spend the weekend in the rain building up another world, 'cause Monday's world feels wrong again people build their own computers, write the code and give it away 'cause what they needed wasn't something they could buy anyway the doctor sees the ones with no papers once the doors are locked she knows the law and what is right don't always line up, so she doesn't stop we keep on making work, though there's nowhere it can go 'cause who decides what counts is not a question we'll let go No speeches and no banners we're not waiting we set it up, we argue it out and change it when it's old It doesn't look like politics it doesn't have a name nobody's on the news for it it happens all the same it's people running things themselves without asking who's in charge it's how we learn to run the world in rooms that aren't that large They say it's easier to picture the whole world burning down than to picture the rent going down in this town they said there was no other way, and we half believed it too they said the tiredness was ours to fix, a private thing for you a pill, a podcast and an early night, and try again next week but the whole street's tired the same, so maybe it's not you that's weak We all get tired and lonely, but look and you'll find me with plenty of others searching for another world in the margins of this one most of us can feel it, something here's not right we say if only we could change it, but we could start tonight the songs all sound like ones we've heard, the future didn't show but it's in the server's court and in the skaters' concrete row Half the jobs are forms and meetings nobody would miss while the cleaner and the carer get the least for work like this a debt's a promise someone turned to numbers and then backed with force the ones that don't get written down are what keep things on course long ago some towns would change their rules with every season and if you didn't like it you could leave, and no one asked the reason the way things are was made by people, every bit of it so we can make it over, and we've made a start on it We don't talk about a revolution we build what we can today it carries no rewards and it doesn't look important but the change is here already but the change is here already if you look in the right place the everyday is full of what is still to come it dreams of another world we can't yet name what they call useless is what we mean What they call nerd is what's dangerous to them what they call wrong is right what they ignore is the beginning of another world It doesn't look like politics it doesn't have a name nobody's on the news for it it happens all the same it's people running things themselves without asking who's in charge it's how we learn to run the world in rooms that aren't that large The future's here already it's just not evenly spread
