The Kolding Creature was a virtual three-dimensional creature created from 3D scans of local Kolding pets and conversations with their owners. The project invited citizens to have their pets gently scanned to contribute to a composite digital monster that would inhabit the area around Borchs Gård in Kolding city centre.
The work was part of "Radius Kolding," an artistic research project inspired by Dutch practices of sending artists into a specific radius to investigate local activities and create new artworks. The virtual creature could be experienced through mobile phones and tablets using augmented reality technology.
Pet owners were invited to register at kolding.monster and bring their animals for scanning sessions on 24-25 September 2021 at the sustainability house on Jernbanegade 3. Each scanning session lasted approximately 30 minutes and included conversations between pet owners and the artist about their animals.
The project involved citizen participation in creating the final artwork, with local residents contributing both their pets' physical forms and personal stories. The scanning process was designed to be gentle and non-intrusive for the animals whilst collecting the digital data needed to construct the hybrid creature.
The Kolding Creature was unveiled on 30 October 2021 as part of a Kunstwalk featuring multiple artists working in Kolding city centre. The virtual creature remained accessible in the Borchs Gård area until 1 March 2022, allowing ongoing public engagement with the augmented reality artwork.
