AALBORG ER FREMTIDEN (Aalborg Is the Future) is a public art project by Kristoffer Ørum that presents an alternative perspective on Aalborg's history.

Combining elements from the early labor movement with the local hip-hop culture of the 1990s, the project explores untapped potential where creativity, community, and enjoyment take center stage. It weaves together factual history, fiction, and AI-generated imagery to imagine a meeting between hip-hop’s pursuit of individual freedom and the labor movement’s collective struggle for better conditions.

The project features a map and website highlighting 16 reinterpreted locations in Aalborg. Using AI, familiar sites are transformed into speculative visions, such as Karolinelunden as a DIY amusement park or Aalborg Shipyard taken over by its workers. These narratives, blending hope and fiction, are both plausible and subtly flawed, exposing their computer-generated origins while opening new ways to reimagine the past and future.

The launch (December 7, 2024) consisted of a performative city walk, a community meal, and a concert with Christian Høgh, organized with f.eks. and supported by multiple cultural partners.

Part of Ørum’s ongoing project "Freedom, Equality, and Hip-Hop", the work engages AI technologies (Flux.1, Stable Diffusion 3.5) to construct histories that never were, inviting audiences to reflect on technology, memory, and possibility.

Maps are freely available across Aalborg, and the project’s website continues to expand its speculative histories.
