At Captive Portal, the Aarhus-based Institute for Emancipation Science deployed three research stations for 14 days, which included a caravan of books, children, and conversation pieces. The purpose was to prepare for a larger installation of the institute's book collection, and the format became a mix of a seminar and a study trip.
The space was used as an open-plan office, where on weekdays we facilitated experiments in book arrangement, day care, reading circles, and writing workshops. At the weekend, we invited family, colleagues, and friends in for discussion and coffee.
From the institute's perspective, Captive Portal's dual nature as both a studio and an exhibition platform offered an opportunity to form new communities with an emancipatory aim. We will gladly return from time to time for more good moments. One can only become wiser by investigating things in a space together with like-minded people.
